I bought this for Christmas fro my 9yr old niece from an independent book seller in Long Beach, CA (woot!) and mailed it to her in NY. What made this book so appealing to me was that it was based in such a non-american context, and that it would expose her to another way of being feminine. We are sri lankan and i wanted her to read a book from the perspective of a beautiful courageous BROWN girl, if you know what i mean.
Anyways, she absolutely loved this book, and while she is addicted to the Warrior series, this book got her unhooked from it for the time being and she realized reading this that she had a reading capability much higher than she initially presumed. Also, she ended up writing a school book report on Princess Kandake. My sister also recognize that my niece was constructing narrative sentence structures in more creative and advanced ways, and she suspects that this book inspired her to do so! So thats a great plus. I will certainly be getting the new book for her!
